What Makes a Wedding at Manor House Special
Most wedding venues near Denver offer one thing exceptionally well. The Manor House offers everything exceptionally well, all within a single property.
That is a rare thing. So before we go room by room, let me explain why this venue photographs the way it does and why couples who book here tend to say it exceeded every expectation.

The Manor House wedding venue is, at its core, a real home. It was built for living, entertaining, and welcoming guests at the highest level. That intention is still present in every room. The chandeliers, the fireplace, the library shelves, the grand staircase — none of it feels staged. It all belongs here. When you bring florals, a live band, black tie attire, or a staircase covered in flowers into a space like this, the results are extraordinary because the bones are already there.
For couples planning an elegant wedding full of character and charm, it is genuinely hard to find a better venue in Colorado.
From a photographer’s perspective, the variety of spaces here is unlike almost anywhere else I shoot. Each room carries its own mood. Each location on the property tells a different story. That means your wedding gallery feels like it spans an entire world rather than a single backdrop, and that is something most venues simply cannot deliver.
The History of The Manor House
The Manor House was built in 1914 by John Charles Shaffer, a media mogul and cattle rancher who commissioned Denver architect Frank Edbrooke to construct a summer estate at the highest point of the four-mile-wide Ken Caryl Valley.
Shaffer named the valley Ken Caryl after his two sons, Kent and Carroll. He built the main manor house with 8,000 square feet, 20 rooms, and an 80-foot-long living room with mirrored fireplaces at each end. The property hosted Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, along with industrial leaders and artists of the era.

One of the most beloved details of the estate’s history is the 110-foot flagpole that still stands behind the manor. Its light was originally battery-operated and visible from Denver through the saddle of the Dakota Hogback. When lit, it was Shaffer’s open invitation to the Denver social community: come celebrate. The Manor House continues that tradition today.
Kent’s Cottage — now used as the primary getting-ready space for the bridal party — was originally built by Shaffer for his son Kent. It is the same cottage where Kent and his wife raised their children in the 1910s and 1920s. That context makes the space feel like more than just a prep room. It has a story.
Spaces That Make This Venue Exceptional
What sets The Manor House wedding venue apart most is not any single room. It is the combination of all of them together.
Most venues give you one ceremony space and one reception space. The Manor House gives you a library, two lounge rooms, a grand piano, a wraparound set of white columns, a bar area, an indoor reception hall with a grand fireplace, an outdoor ceremony lawn with mountain views, and a carriage house down the path. Each space is distinct. Each one photographs differently. Together, they make an entire wedding day feel visually rich from start to finish.
The Library

This is one of my favorite spaces at The Manor House. Located on the main floor, it features floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, dark wood paneling, natural window light, and a genuinely cozy atmosphere that is hard to manufacture anywhere else.
It works beautifully for groom and groomsmen portraits, a couple’s first look, private vow readings, or quiet moments between the ceremony and reception. Because it sits directly above the basement getting-ready space, it is also easy to move in and out of throughout the day. The mood in this room feels timeless and editorial in all the right ways.

The Main Floor Lounge Rooms
The two lounge areas on the main floor both feature comfortable seating, elegant furnishings, a grand piano, and the kind of ambient light that makes candid portraits effortless. These spaces work well during cocktail hour when guests gather naturally, and the photography almost takes care of itself.

The Bar Area
Attached to one end of the building is a dedicated bar space with its own character and energy. It’s more than a place to grab a drink. It’s a space filled with laughter that makes you want to stay and linger.
The Grand Entrance and Columns

The exterior of the manor is one of the most photographed backdrops at this venue for good reason. The white columns and grand stone steps leading up to the entrance are iconic. They are formal without feeling stiff, and they give every portrait a sense of scale and importance. This area photographs well during any time of the day offering both shaded or direct light, depending on your preference. The columns also add depth to composition creating strong leading lines and creative framing opportunities all against a neutral background.
Getting Ready: Kent’s Cottage and the Bridal Suite
Kent’s Cottage
Kent’s Cottage sits on the Manor House wedding venue property a short walk from the main manor, and is the most popular getting-ready space for bridal parties. It is a 2,500 square foot, three-bedroom, two-bath historic home with its own vintage-style bathroom featuring a freestanding soaking tub — which is frequently used as a photography element in its own right.

The cottage includes lunch and beverage service, an on-call concierge, and a 10am check-in, which means the morning unfolds without any rushing or stress before the day picks up. Inside, the cottage features large windows, warm natural light throughout the morning, and enough space for a full bridal party to spread out without feeling cramped. Because it is a separate structure from the main house, the bridal party gets a sense of privacy and quiet. Multiple rooms also means the photographer can move between different settings, so your getting-ready photos have genuine variety.
The cottage is included in all full-day buyout packages and available as a $1,500 add-on with PM venue rentals.

The Bridal Suite
For couples who prefer to stay within the manor itself, the bridal suite on the upper floor is a spacious, elegant alternative. The single large room accommodates a full group together — ideal if you want everyone in one place and love that communal energy of getting ready as a team. It is lighter in palette than the cottage and lends itself well to bright, airy getting-ready photography. It also features a floor to ceiling mirror, an exposed brick wall, and the iconic bright red velvet couch in the small attached room. This areas doubles as a perfect place for taking a moment of peace together after the ceremony and signing your marriage license.

The Groomsmen’s Space
The basement of the main manor is the designated getting-ready area for the groomsmen and beautifully contrasts the bridesmaids getting ready space.
Exposed brick walls, a pool table, comfortable seating, and a more masculine aesthetic give the guys an environment that actually suits them. Consequently, this gives their portraits a look that stands apart from generic hotel room photography. The pool table creates natural activity-based shots that always produce relaxed, authentic images. The warm lighting and brick backdrop do the rest.
Manor House Ceremony Options: Indoor and Outdoor
The Outdoor Ceremony Lawn
During warmer months, most couples choose to say their vows on the ceremony lawn in backyard of The Manor House. The backdrop is the open expanse of Ken Caryl Valley with the Rocky Mountain foothills, perfect for couples who want the convenience of the city while still highlighting the beauty of Colorado’s natural landscape.
The Indoor Ceremony Option
This is where The Manor House sets itself apart from other Denver-area venues. Most venues with beautiful outdoor spaces have an indoor backup that is adequate at best. The Manor House indoor ceremony space is not a backup — it is a destination in its own right. The ballroom features a grand fireplace at the center, chandeliers overhead, large windows that bring in soft natural light, and a sense of grandeur that feels appropriate for a black tie affair, a winter wedding, or any couple who simply prefers the intimacy of being enclosed in a beautiful space.

That fireplace specifically is worth planning around. Couples typically use it as a focal point for the head table or ceremony backdrop offering vertical creativity in decor. When paired with rich florals or hanging installations, it ties the room together in an extraordinary way.
The ability to offer an indoor ceremony that is equally as beautiful as the outdoor option is rare. At The Manor House, you are genuinely choosing between two great options — not settling for one.
The Reception Space at Manor House
The reception hall at The Manor House (which doubles as the indoor ceremony option) is a natural extension of the manor’s design language. It accommodates up to 200 guests for a seated dinner. The layout allows for a traditional head table arrangement, sweetheart table, or round-table configuration depending on the couple’s vision.

During warmer months, guests can step out through side doors during the reception as the sun sets over the foothills, which means golden hour portraits do not require leaving the party. The transition from the reception back inside is seamless.
One detail worth noting specifically: the chandeliers in every room at The Manor House do a significant amount of work at no extra cost. Before a single flower arrangement or table linen arrives, this space already feels elevated, setting an early tone for your day.
Is a Winter or Off-Season Wedding Right for You?
The Manor House is one of the strongest arguments for a Colorado winter wedding I can make.
At elevation venues elsewhere in Colorado, winter weddings involve genuine weather risk, limited access, and difficult travel for guests. The Manor House sits at a far more accessible elevation in the Denver metro area. Roads are not an issue. Guest travel from Denver International Airport is straightforward. And the venue itself — with its fireplaces, chandeliers, and indoor ceremony option — is arguably at its most atmospheric from November through April.
The Manor House wedding venue also offers a significant rental discount for off-season dates. That means couples can invest more in florals, a live band, custom dance floors, or other personal touches that elevate the experience. The February wedding featured in this post is a direct example of what that looks like in practice.

Guest Logistics and Getting Here

A Real Manor House Wedding: February Black Tie
The wedding I am highlighting in this post took place on February 27th, and it stands as one of the clearest examples of what The Manor House makes possible in the off-season.
The couple chose a classic color palette of white and green with intentional whimsical elements layered throughout. The entire staircase was covered in a cascade of florals, drawing you in the second you walk through the front doors. Hanging floral installations filled the reception space, interacting with the chandeliers above and creating a ceiling that transformed the room entirely.

The dance floor was custom black and white in a classic pattern that complemented the black tie dress code perfectly. A live band anchored the reception. Espresso martinis circulated through the crowd. Every detail felt considered and cohesive, and the venue held all of it without effort because that kind of elevated event is exactly what it was built for.
Photographically, that February date gave us something outdoor summer weddings do not always offer: soft winter light, a cozy interior that felt genuinely warm against the cold outside, and the fireplace as a dominant feature rather than a background detail. Because it was an extraordinarily windy day, the portraits primarily took place inside the house, again showcasing the versatility and reliability of The Manor House wedding venue. No matter what weather you have on wedding day, you will get guaranteed gorgeous photos either way.
