A Fall Wedding at Vail Golf Club with Golden Aspens

First look moment with Gore Range mountains and fall foliage at Vail Golf Club

Lauren and Hanna chose the last weekend of September for their fall wedding at Vail Golf Club, and the timing could not have been more perfect. Late September, when the mountains are bursting with golden color, is the most popular time of the year for weddings in Colorado. On this particular weekend, the aspens were at peak, the air was crisp, and the Gore Range mountains towered in the distance of this thoughtful LGBTQ+ wedding.

If you are considering a fall wedding at Vail Golf Club, this post takes you through what a September wedding actually feels like, including a 106-guest celebration filled with cultural traditions. For a full breakdown of the venue itself (pricing, logistics, capacity, light strategy, and more), check out my complete Vail Golf Club wedding venue guide.

Why Late September Is the Sweet Spot

At 8,150 feet (VGC’s elevation), aspen trees usually peak between the last week of September and the first few days of October, but catching them right at the perfect time comes down to luck. Each year the timing changes slightly based on temperature, precipitation, and environmental stress. Book too early and you may still see green. Book too late and wind can thin the canopy overnight.

Lauren and Hanna secured the final weekend of September, which historically offers the most reliable color density, and they couldn’t have been more spot on. Thick foliage created rich framing, even tones in portraits, and strong visual contrast against the mountains. In short, it was a photographer’s dream.

The trade-off with a fall wedding compared to spring or summer is daylight compression. Sunset arrives earlier and the evenings are more susceptible to colder temps. The solution, however, is not rushing. It is intentionally designing the morning around your biggest photo priorities and working backward from sunset.

Getting Ready at The Westin Riverfront

Lauren and Hanna started their wedding morning at The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon. They each had bridal suites with views of Beaver Creek in the background and a small group of bridesmaids to get ready with. Hair and makeup started early at 7 AM and was just finishing up when I arrived to start photos. Although they were an LGBTQ+ couple, that didn’t necessarily mean that each of the brides had the same morning experience. What made the day fun was being able to bring out their unique individual personalities throughout their wedding.

While morning photos lay the foundation for the wedding day, these brides really wanted to prioritize quality time together and get to their first look as soon as possible. I bounced back and forth to capture key moments in the two rooms, and the wedding planner helped execute a quick first look with each of the brides’ fathers before hitting the road.

The Westin is about a 15-20 minute drive from the Vail Golf Club. However, it offers the space, natural light, and mountain setting that the venue’s small bridal suite simply cannot provide. If you are planning a Vail Golf Club wedding, I highly recommend getting ready at your hotel or Airbnb and using the on-site bridal suite for storage and touch-ups only. The Westin is an excellent choice, or check out my full list of Vail wedding hotel recommendations within my Vail Golf Club wedding venue guide for more.

First Look in the Aspen Grove

Lauren and Hanna did their first look on the aspen-lined bike path near the Wedding Island in the early afternoon. In late September, this corridor becomes fully enveloped in color, and the warm light filtering through creates something truly magical. Leaves don’t just hang overhead. They surround you in a forest of flickering gold. It is one of my favorite portrait locations at this venue in any season.

Yes, it is a public path. Yes, you share it with pedestrians and cyclists. But yes, it’s 100% worth it.

After the first look, the wedding party joined us and we moved further down the path to accommodate the larger grouping. To avoid being seen by soon arriving guests, we then headed back to the clubhouse to take individual bridesmaids and family photos. Aside from staying hidden, the other advantage of taking family photos on the clubhouse lawn is that it gives everyone an easy spot to congregate and relax. There are outdoor tables for older folks to hang out, room for small children to run around, and bathrooms nearby if needed unlike in the aspen grove. While logistics may feel complicated and daunting, having an experienced photographer to guide you confidently from one location to the next, makes the day seamless.

Fall Ceremony on the Wedding Island at Vail Golf Club

Guests arrived at the Wedding Island around 3:30 PM. From there, they walked the final stretch through the golden aspen tunnel and across the footbridge. With multiple locations, shuttles, and logistics to consider, hiring a planner or coordinator is essential for this venue, and Becca from Veils of Vail couldn’t have been a better fit.

Vail Golf Club does not include ceremony chairs with their wedding package so you will need to rent these from an outside company. Most couples at this venue don’t actually see the Wedding Island until they are walking down the aisle, so hiring a planner that you fully trust makes all the difference.

The ceremony started at 4 PM and incorporated intentional touches throughout. The officiant, a close friend, shared personal stories and acknowledged gratitude for Mother Nature. Then she led the brides through a symbolic mala bead necklace exchange, and they finished with personal vows. The thoughtfulness of the ceremony left guests and family members alike with glossy eyes and small glimpse of the deep love these two ladies share for each other.

The brides then shared an iconic first kiss moment, and guests celebrated with silver streamers. With the rolling golden mountains as their witness, these two ladies were officially married!

Cocktail Hour on the Lawn

After the ceremony, shuttles looped guests back to the clubhouse for cocktail hour on the covered patio and lawn. Because Lauren and Hanna planned a first look and all of their formal photos before the ceremony, they were able to join for most of cocktail hour. First though, they took a moment to enjoy that “just married” feeling on the Wedding Island together.

When we arrived back at the clubhouse, guests were laughing over signature drinks and lawn games. Lauren and Hanna originally met playing hockey, so they set up a yard hockey game. Simple touches like this prioritized guest experience while still being true to the couple.

While I photographed the final reception space, the brides were able to simply be present with their guests. Quality time was their biggest priority, and their timeline was intentionally built in support of that.

Before moving inside, guests gathered around the lawn to kick off the reception with a first dance. This moment was casual, sweet, and unmistakably “Colorado,” perfect for this mountain couple.

Reception Inside the Gore Range Room

Inside the Gore Range Room, the reception featured an elegant tea theme that felt completely unique to Lauren and Hanna. Each place setting had a different teacup and saucer. During the welcome toasts, the couple performed a tea ceremony, connecting guests together and setting intention for the day. It was one of those reception moments that felt deeply personal rather than performative. It also gave the room intimacy and purpose that a standard cocktail toast cannot replicate.

Sunset and Alpenglow

Because the Vail Golf Club sits in a valley, the venue loses direct sunlight well before the actual sunset time. Instead of golden hour, the magic happens when the last light of the day hits the Gore Range peaks and they turn a bright, warm pink with alpenglow. On this evening, the mountains delivered. The peaks were glowing against a deepening blue sky, with golden aspens filling the midground. It was one of those Colorado moments that makes you understand why people fly across the country to get married here.

It was as if the warmth of the mountainside perfectly mirrored the warmth of the day.

If you’re planning a fall wedding at Vail Golf Club, this is the photo moment to build your evening around. Work backward from sunset to make sure you have time to step outside between dinner courses or after toasts. You won’t want to miss this!

Gore Range Room Dance Floor and Dessert

After sunset photos, family members and friends shared a few kind words about the couple. Then the brides kicked off the night festivities with a cake cutting.

Once the formalities were finished, it was time to dance. Each of the ladies shared their own respective parent dance, and then guests took to the dance floor to join. The chandeliers and ceiling uplighting added soft ambient light to the photos while guests waved colorful glow sticks. The night ended the way fall mountain weddings often do: cool air, quiet mountains, and a sense of fullness. It was a true picture perfect, well lived day.

Why This Day Worked

A few things made Lauren and Hanna’s wedding run smoothly:

Strategic date selection.
They secured peak foliage choosing the most ideal fall weekend. That timing made every outdoor photo feel like it belonged in a magazine.

Structured transportation planning.
Multiple shuttles. Coordinated timing. Clear communication. Zero confusion.

Morning margin.
An early start allowed relaxation later in the day.

Design tied to meaning.
The tea ceremony and mala bead necklace exchange reflected personality rather than trend.

Quality local vendors.

They hired a local planner and photographer who know this space inside and out. Becca handled the shuttle logistics, guest management, and vendor coordination, while I tackled timeline management so the couple simply could focus on being present.

Fall at Vail Golf Club is powerful, but it requires intention. When timing, logistics, and light are aligned, it’s hard to imagine a better fall wedding venue.
