I recommend booking at least a 2-hour session for skiing on the mountain, with the option to add an additional hour if you’d like to include photos in Vail Village. This gives us plenty of time to explore multiple locations, capture a variety of shots, and never feel rushed.
Weekday sessions work best. Weekend crowds can mean longer lift lines and more skiers in our shots, so I typically schedule these sessions during the week when we’ll have more freedom to move around the mountain and won’t waste precious time waiting in line.
Morning sessions are ideal, as some lifts close earlier in the afternoon which can limit where we can go on the mountain. That said, I know Vail well enough to shoot at any time of day—I’ll simply adjust our location based on the time and lighting conditions.

November – Early December: The mountain is just opening, so snow coverage may be limited and not all terrain will be accessible. However, it’s less crowded!
January – February: Peak winter with the most snow and full terrain access. These months are typically colder, so bundle up! The mountain looks absolutely magical with fresh powder.
March (My Favorite!): You get the best of both worlds—excellent snow coverage with warmer temperatures. This is the sweet spot for comfort while still having that quintessential winter backdrop.
April: Spring skiing season offers the most comfortable temperatures, especially if you’d prefer not to wear a ton of bulky layers. However, terrain may be more limited as snow begins to melt.
What to Wear for Your Ski Engagement Photos
Layering is your best friend. Colorado mountain weather can change quickly, and you’ll want to be comfortable whether it’s sunny and warm or windy and cold. Here are my top tips:
Outfit Coordination: Choose outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. You don’t want to wear the exact same color as it can make the photos look flat.
Color Palette: I love a classic black and white combo for engagements, but a pop of color can be fun too!
